Can You Control Your Dreams?

Do you ever wonder: Can you control what you dream about? When the person is dreaming, if he has awareness that he is dreaming and can control that dream, the term ‘lucid dream’ is used. There are questions like: can we control our dreams? As with many unsolvable things about our brain, the unknowns about dreams remain like a dark secret, but dreams can be controlled. However, controlling dreams is not easy, it needs some work and exercise. The researchers say that controllable dreams cannot be seen willingly, but can be seen in different ways.

Although the ability to manipulate dreams is mostly seen in science-fiction films, techniques for controlling or at least influencing dreams are also the subject of research on sleep. This phenomenon, which has been known since Aristotle, who has written his observations about controllable dreams, can be described as “being aware that he is in a dream”. Researchers say such dreams cannot be seen willingly, but the likelihood of seeing them in different ways can be increased (1). If someone asks you ‘can you control your dreams?’, you can answer that question yes, thanks to the ways of that essay. Firstly, you should be patient. It is highly unlikely that someone who has never controlled a dream will dream lucidly on his first attempt. If you want to control your dreams, do not give up. Trust your consciousness so that he can open himself up to you in a dream. In addition, in order to be successful, the research was conducted using three different techniques:

Dream Control Techniques

Reality test: Even if you are sure you are awake, you should say to yourself during the day, “I am not dreaming right now, I am awake”. This is the technique of creating habits by controlling whether you are in a dream at different times and processing this control into your subconscious.

Wake up to sleep: Waking up with an alarm 5 hours after going to sleep and immediately going back to sleep when you wake up.

Reminder behavior technique:  When you wake up five hours later, you’re going to say to yourself, “Next time I wake up, I’ll be dreaming” and focus on dreaming, acknowledging your intention to achieve lucid dream.

Such dreams are usually thought to occur during REM sleep. In dreams during REM sleep, the anterior region of the brain responsible for logical thinking and short-term memory is inactive. However, it is thought that this area was operating at a level where it was awake at the time of the controllable dreams. This situation, in which logic and dream are activated at the same time, can allow the dreamer to control his dream.

The question that ‘can u control your dreams?’ is now answered. These are the basic methods of dream control, but they can also be their own methods that people develop as a result of their experiences.
