Today, we still talk a lot about dreams. We often consider what they might imply. We also know that practically everyone dreams, whether or not they remember their dreams when they wake up. But why do we dream in the first place? The short answer is that scientists do not know for sure. Whatever the reason for our dreams, it’s fascinating to investigate how long they can last.
How Long Do Dreams Last?
Even though the general belief is that dreams last no more than mere seconds, experts disagree (1). It’s difficult to determine how long a dream will last. On the other hand, experts can estimate how long you might dream for. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the average person dreams four to six times every night. According to the National Institutes of Health, you could spend up to 2 hours in dreamland throughout a night’s sleep (2).
Your brain does not disconnect from the outside world while you sleep, which means that any external or internal stimulus can reach and alter the image that your brain is modeling when you dream. A noise, your blanket, or the posture of your limbs are all examples of external stimuli. Organs or unconscious desires that were suppressed throughout active life are examples of interior stimuli. As a result, your brain is constantly bombarded with information from within and without; in other words, you’re continuously dreaming but don’t realize it. As a result, your brain is constantly bombarded with information from within and without; in other words, you’re continuously dreaming but don’t realize it. You are aware that you just dreamed at the time of awakening. Imagine looking out the window of a moving train and seeing dozens of new images changing one after another. This is the dream process, and you’re completely unaware of it; now imagine the train coming to a complete halt, and seeing only one image; this is the moment of awakening. The dream is constantly inter webbing diverse stimuli in an attempt to explain what is going on with you; however, your conscious experience of the dream is limited by the sleep phase you are in at the time of awakening.
In REM phases, the awareness may recall up to 30 minutes of dreams, and the user can use some procedures to extend the REM period and so remember more of a dream (3). As a result, the answer to the question is that it depends on the dreamer. But it’s certainly more than three seconds.
